Why Pets Love Riding The Ferry

5 Reasons A Ferry Ride Is the Best Pet Treat

For years, animal lovers and their four-legged companions have enjoyed ferry rides. We know why animal lovers like taking their dogs on the ferry. Two key reasons: 1.  Pets travel free and 2. Pet lovers like taking their pets out with them!

But, there are more reasons why dogs like going on the Ferry. It includes everything from breathing in open air, sighting the most unique birds (with a bark), rocking and relaxing Adirondack chairs and because of that, we’ve put a list of reasons together for you. Here are some of the reasons why pets love riding the ferry as much as their owners!

Two dogs on board the ferry

1) New Animal Sightings

While on board they get to see their favorite whale and dolphin friends in the Delaware Bay. During the summer months, many whales and dolphins travel along the waters for furry passengers to see. And, to be clear, 2016 has been an AMAZING year for sighting whales!

2) Walk Arounds

You pup can endlessly walk around the boat for the entire width of the Delaware Bay!  Dogs enjoy the 360 degree views of the bay from many vantage points from the wrap around deck. On later rides, sights include  a stunning sunset.

3) Ball Chases

Before boarding the ferry, dogs of all shapes and sizes can play free miniature golf with their owners. We promote tail puts and nose puts. Lots of owners like to give their dogs a good run from golf to ball tosses on the Ferry greens to  get all their sillies out before the Ferry ride.

4) New Friends

Your wonderful pup can meet other furry friends from around the world! People and their pets from all over the country use the ferry to travel, so you never know who you may get to meet. For those with puppy eyes, you won’t want to miss out.  Your pup should be very friendly, but if he or she is afraid of other pets, they can stay in vehicles with the windows open for fresh air.

5) Free and Freedom

Let’s face it. Dogs think everything is free, and in this case they are correct. Dogs ride free!  So do rabbits and cats and parrots, but we don’t have to let the dogs know that.

These are only a few of the reasons why pets love riding the ferry but there are plenty more. Come and see why everyone loves riding the Cape May- Lewes Ferry as much as their four-legged companions! Visit our website now  to book a trip for you and your 4 legged bestie.

Helpful Travel Tips For Travel with Pets

• Bring water and a bowl for your pet during warmer months.

• Arrive early to give your pet a chance to stretch and use the designated relief areas before boarding.

• Keep an eye on the weather—shade is limited on some decks during mid-day crossings.

• Plan your adventures! Many beaches and parks near both terminals are pet-friendly.

Pre-Boarding Preparation

1. Take a Walk Before Boarding Pee-Break Priority! Utilize the green spaces around each Ferry terminal. Make sure your dog empties their bladder and bowel before you start the boarding process. The extra walk also helps burn energy, leading to a calmer voyage. 2. Don’t Provide Food Beforehand Like humans, some dogs are prone to motion sickness or anxiety, which can lead to an upset stomach.
  • Safety First: Avoid feeding your dog a full meal too close to boarding time.
  • Timing: For early voyages, feed your dog upon arrival. For late voyages, consider a late dinner after all travel is complete.
3. Take a Doggie Care Bag Just like a diaper bag, a Doggie Care Bag is essential!
  • Essentials: Pack poop bags, paper towels, and any other needed supplies.
  • Accidents Happen: Crew and fellow passengers are always grateful if you can quickly and easily clean up any unforeseen messes.

On-Board Guidelines & Safety

4. Keep Your Dog Leashed & Close For the comfort and safety of all passengers:
  • Dogs must be on a leash at all times, even when resting on the decks.
  • Please keep your dog on a short leash and close by as a courtesy — not all passengers are dog friendly.
5. Seek Shade & Monitor Deck Temperature Deck surfaces can heat up quickly, even with a breeze!
  • Paws Check: Feel the deck with your palm. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
  • Rule of Paw: If you would not walk barefoot, your pet should not either. Move your pet to a cooler, shaded area if the deck is hot.
6. Utilize Inside Pet Areas If the weather is extreme (too hot or too cold), you have options:
  • Each vessel has an assigned dog sitting area.
  • Please ensure your dog remains in the designated pet area and away from all food preparation or service spaces.
7. Be Kind to Strangers A sociable dog is a welcome dog.
  • If your dog is not sociable, we recommend traveling with them by car.
  • In-Car Tips: Stay in your car for most of the voyage, ensuring windows are cracked for air. You can ask the crew at the toll to stage your vehicle in a shaded area beneath a deck.
8. Bring a Water Bowl Hydration is key, especially in summer!
  • While water is available on board, not all dogs drink well from bottles.
  • Bring a mobile or collapsible water bowl to ensure your pet stays well-hydrated throughout the trip.
9. Ask for Help Need to step away? We’ve got you covered.
  • Dogs are not allowed in food areas (restrooms, cafes, etc.).
  • If you need to use the restroom or buy food and are traveling alone, please notify a crew member. They will be happy to help arrange for someone to “pet sit” for a few minutes.
10. Walk Across the Bay! Enjoy the journey and get your steps in!
  • Take advantage of the outside decks for a stroll.
  • Your dog will love watching the seagulls and sniffing the sea air. Just remember to check the deck temperature as you walk!
